This series consists of Leonard Elmhirst's records primarily regarding the development of the site 31-33a St Giles, Oxford, and the building of Dartington House, involving the architect Robert Hening with the financial assistance of the Dartington Hall Trust. The records document Leonard Elmhirst's attempt to bring together in one building (Dartington House), using a common library, the Institute of Agrarian Affairs (IAA), the Institute for Research into Agricultural Economics (IRAE) and the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau (CAB) international digesting service, World Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Abstracts (WAERSA). This series contains records regarding the future of Dartington House and the possibility of Dartington House taking over from Dartington Hall all of Leonard Elmhirst's Agricultural Economics papers, including all the International Conference of Agricultural Economists papers. Also included is eventual decision and transfer of 54 boxes of Leonard's records to the Institute of Agricultural History, University of Reading under the direction of Dr E J T Collins.
The records consist of correspondence accumulated by Leonard Elmhirst. Major correspondents include: J R Currie; J J McGragor, Commonwealth Forestry Institute; C E White, Estate Steward, Dartington Hall; and Robert Hening, architect.
Subjects include: the future and development of 31-33a St Giles, Oxford and Dartington House as centre for IRAE, IAA, and CAB; the future and finance of the IAA with a grant aid by The Dartington Hall Trustees; the establishment of a Commonwealth Bureau of Agricultural Economics in the UK, and the transfer of the World Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Abstracts (WAERSA) to the UK and into 31 St Giles; the future of the Digests of Agricultural Economics with its possible incorporation into the WAERSA; the incorporation of the IAA into the Institute of Agricultural Economics (IAE) in 1971.
