Description | Correspondence and reports, dedicatory speeches, press cuttings, and architectural records relating to the donation by Dorothy Whitney Straight Elmhirst of Willard Straight Hall at Cornell University, a student union building dedicated in 1925. Correspondence includes early suggestions for a Straight memorial at Cornell from professors (many favouring a new faculty club). At least two letters are from architect William Adams Delano. About 10 letters are from Cornell University president Livingston Farrand . Letters from Foster M Coffin, manager of Willard Straight Hall, recount preparations for the 10th and 25th anniversaries of the Hall, including correspondence relating to an exhibition of the artwork and collections of Willard Straight in 1950. A catalogue lists artworks belonging to the Willard Straight Hall collection, especially paintings donated by Michael Straight, and funded by the William C Whitney Foundation. An unusual letter from Harriet Moody (10 Jun 1922) mentions Gretchen Green, and the Gurudev (Rabindranath Tagore). Lastly, there are printed guides to microform copies of the papers of both Willard Straight and Dorothy Whitney Straight Elmhirst held by the Cornell University Library Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections. |
