| Aktivitet | Among the first pupils at Dartington Hall School, he went on to the London School of Economics and Cambridge University where he studied economics under John Maynard Keynes. He was the first American to be elected President of the Union. Michael returned to the United States in 1937 and worked in the Department of State as a speech writer and adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1941 he became the Washington Editor of the 'New Republic (the journal of liberal politics founded by his parents) through which he vigorously campaigned for America's entry into the war in Europe. Mentioned in the letters is Michael's book 'Make this the Last War', which was the first published study on the United States war aims and the future of the newly formed United Nations. He joined the US Air Corps Reserve in November 1942 and trained air cadets until he managed to persuade the authorities to train him as a combat pilot. He flew B-17s and later B-29s but the war ended before he could go into active service. From 1946-56 Michael was Editor and publisher of the 'New Republic', then left the world of politics to write his two novels, 'Carrington' and 'A Very Small Remnant'. From 1969-77 he was the Deputy Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Federal agency for the encouragement and assistance of the arts. In later years he lived with his second wife, Nina Auchincloss Steers, in Bethesda, Maryland and on Martha's Vineyard. |
