In 1941, Dorothy Elmhirst had invited the Sickness and Benevolent Committee to study how best an Estate Representative Committee could be elected. Dorothy felt that as the place had grown larger the touch between the trustees and employees had been lost. As a result the Estate Committee was established in 1942 by the trustees and chaired by J V Elmhirst. The purpose of the Committee to assist with the welfare of all those who live and work on the Estate.

The Dartington Hall Estate Committee was a separate, independent, unincorporated voluntary association operating under Dartington Hall Trust. The purpose and function of the Estate Committee was: to provide a means whereby those who work and live on the Estate may be consulted on matters affecting the Estate; to assist in the communication process across the Estate; to discuss and devise schemes for furthering the welfare of employees, retired employees, residents; to raise and administer charitable funds within the Dartington Community; to organise and administer social and celebratory events for the benefit of the Dartington Community. The Estate Committee activities included: annual donations to the War Memorial Fund for the benefit of people who wishing to take advantage of further education; donations from the collection from Carol Concerts to the 50th Anniversary Fund to help disabled people visit Dartington and take part in activities; holiday caravan at low prices; annual treat for retired employees; financial assistance to various organisations in the village; social outings for employees. The Estate Committee aimed to be involved in any functions in an effort to generate community spirit across the Estate including Estate Carol Concert, Bonfire and Firework displays.

The Estate Committee consisted of: 1 Member nominated from and by each department/activity, 1 Associate Member nominated from and by each activity including 1 retired employee nominated by the Long Service Association, Welfare Officer to the Retired Employees, secretary, and 1 co-opted member from tenants on the Estate who are not employed by The Dartington Hall Trust, 1 co-opted member from a resident on the Estate not employed by The Dartington Hall Trust, and 5 other co-opted members. The Committee was to meet a minimum of 6 meetings a year.
