Piper studied at Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art in the 1920s. In 1927 met Braque and Henry Moore and in 1934 began to make abstract constructions, becoming a member of the 7 & 5 Society. By 1936 had returned to figurative painting and in 1940 worked on the Recording Britain scheme, painting scenes of war-damaged churches for the War Artist's Advisory Committee, became an Official War Artist in 1944. Commissions in the 1940's included a series of works of Windsor Castle for HM The Queen. Exhibited widely, solo exhibitions from 1933 in many leading London galleries. He was commissioned by the Elmhirsts to paint Dartington Hall and other buildings on the estate. His work is represented in many public collections including the Tate Gallery, where a retrospective was held in 1983.
