Activity | Studied at Cambridge University. After doing a course in agriculture at Cornell University he arrived at Dartington soon after it was bought by Dorothy and Leonard, to be manager of the Poultry Department, which he took over from G.F. Heuser in 1927. Whilst at Dartington Richard met and married Lou Soelberg, but the marriage lasted only a short time. When he resigned from his job - with some bitterness - he left Dartington Hall and their young daughter Eloise stayed behind to be brought up with her cousins, Ruth and Bill. Richard returned to America and became a US citizen. After America joined the war, Richard joined the US Army and took part in the invasion and occupation of the Japanese islands. In the early years of the war Richard was posted to England where he met, through his ex-wife, Morna Haggard. Immediately after the war ended he returned to England, married Morna and moved to Scotland where they ran a farm and children's holiday centre near Dollar. |
