Studied in Berlin and Munich. In 1931 he started the Deutsche Musikbuhne. He came to England in 1933 and conducted Mozart operas at Glyndebourne before coming to Dartington Hall in September 1937, as Director of the Dartington Hall Music Group and Head of the Music Department. After leaving in 1945 he worked with the English Opera Group. In 1949 he was associate conductor with the Glyndebourne Opera at the Edinburgh Festival. He moved to Scotland and directed the Saltire Singers with Isobel Dunlop, and toured Germany conducting Bach concerts. He died in Edinburgh at the age of 73, on August 19th, 1965.
