Person NameDartington Hall Trust; Sickness and Benevolence Fund; 1937-1997
ActivityEstablished in 1937 by V J Elmhirst through his role as the Estate's Personnel Officer. The purpose of the Fund was to provide employees with payment when they were sick, up to a maximum of 26 weeks, when they were then transferred to the 'Benefit' as opposed to the 'Sickness' side. In 1978 when sickness benefit became the responsibility of the State, the funds were used for the provision of a Christmas gift (a Boots voucher) for retired employees, and for payment towards dental and optical treatment. Contributions were paid into the Fund by employees and employers, and the proceeds invested to produce income.
