ActivityThe Elmhirst Estate consisted of over 600 acres and the land was divided into 13 tenant farms. Since 1899, W H Elmhirst (Leonard Elmhirst's father) had been looking after the Estate himself. In 1926, Leonard persuaded his father to allow his brother, A O (Pom) Elmhirst to assist in the management. With the advice of J J MacGregor and finance of Leonard, A O (Pom) Elmhirst made a number of improvements including the installation of a hot water system and the production of accredited and T T milk. In 1933, Leonard purchased Houndhill, a 100 acre holding in the centre of, and formerly a part of, the property, which he let to A O (Pom) Elmhirst. Houndhill became the 'home farm' of the Estate with additional farms added later including Round Green, Brick House, Genn House, Kendel Green, and Ouslethwaite. In 1948, Leonard succeeded his father to the Estate and in 1950, handed over ownership to A O (Pom) Elmhirst.
