ActivityMcNally (known as 'Mac', spelt as Mc) came to teach at Dartington Hall School in 1934. During the war he was a conscientious objector and worked as a gardener on the estate. With a long time interest in books, Mc taught himself book-binding and then had further training before taking over the school's library, printing presses and bindery in 1946 after Charles Inman retired. An authority on the conservation of books, Mc was a highly respected book-binder and printer. He was responsible for preparing and binding the volumes of photographs and other material in the setting up of the Records Office with Victor Bonham-Carter and Robin Johnson in the 1950s. He taught at the school until 1973 when the presses were moved to the Dartington Adult Education centre, where he continued to work and teach until his death in 1986. Books and printing were one of Leonard Elmhirsts great interests and the almost unique collection of printing and binding euipment that he and Mc established at Dartington is still in use under the direction of Mc's assistant, Mary Bartlett.
