Taught at Allahabad Christian College, India, then studied for degree in agriculture at Ohio State University. Returned to Allahabad, bought tract of derelict land and established the Allahabad Agricultural Institute in 1918. Also, with his wife, set up the Naini Leper Asylum as a model colony.

Leonard Elmhirst acted as his secretary for 5 months, and was encouraged by him to study agriculture at Cornell University in the USA. Higginbottom proposed Leonard to Rabindranath Tagore for his planned experiment to revive villages around the school he had started at Santiniketan, India.

Higginbottom was Gandhi’s adviser to the All India Village Industries Association, set up by Gandhi in 1934.
