| Description | Correspondence primarily with Eleanor Roosevelt, but including two letters from US Secretary of Labor (Labour) Frances Perkins, and one letter from Daisy Harriman, US minister to Norway. In addition there are 15 copies of letters and telegrams between Dorothy Elmhirst and Eleanor Roosevelt (mostly discussing meetings and visits to the White House), obtained for reference only from the Franklin D Roosevelt Library. There are six letters signed by Eleanor Roosevelt. The folder also contains a printed portrait photograph of Franklin D Roosevelt, promotional advertising for furniture made by the Hyde Park Village Craftsmen, press cuttings, and seven colour postcards of F D Roosevelt's Hyde Park home in New York state. Of interest are long drafts of condolence letters written by Dorothy to Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1945. Letters from Eleanor solicit Dorothy's help in establishing a relief fund for coal miners in West Virginia in 1933, and mention the 1939 meeting of the Rural Women of the World in London. Another letter, 19 May 1945, speaks of Eleanor Roosevelt's grief after Franklin Roosevelt's death. There is also a letter (23 Dec 1938) from Daisy Harriman, US ambassador to Norway, to Dorothy, mentioning the US embargo of Spain, the reasons for President Roosevelt's support for Britain, and Prime Minister Chamberlain's 'spell' on US minister to Britain, Joseph Kennedy. |
