Records of a meeting (14 Sep 1933) include a copy of a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt requesting emergency funds for hospital treatment for injured West Virginia coal miners. Other appeals include funds for the defence of a minimum wage law embodied in the National Recovery Act; continuing support of artists, authors, peace activists, scholars conducting social and biological research, the National Urban League, YMCA, the Foundation Study, and the Cornish Repertory Touring Group (of the Cornish School). There is also a long discussion of a guarantee of six months support for German scholar Dr Berta Asch to come to the United States. A similar appeal was received from Edward R Murrow on behalf of the Emergency Committee in Aid of Displaced German Scholars. Lastly there is a 1933 year end summary of all grants or commitments. |
