Activity | Provincial Agricultural Economics Service (PAES) main objective was the collection of farm management and general agricultural economic advisory work, undertaking a vast majority of the research in and teaching of agricultural economics in this country. The department began as part of the general agricultural advisory service attached to Seale-Hayne College, Newton Abbot. Later, in addition to its advisory activities, it assumed responsibility for the collection of statistical information of an economic nature relating mainly to farm incomes and costs for the Ministry of Agriculture, with the objective of building up a fund of data for teaching, advisory and policy purposes. After the War the Ministry of Agriculture decided that the PAES departments in England and Wales attached to agricultural colleges should be transferred to Universities. The responsibility for the PAES in the South West was transferred to the University of Bristol and later, in 1961, to the University of Exeter. The Newton Abbot Centre was eventually integrated into the University of Exeter and its title changed. |
