TitlePersonal correspondence
DescriptionConsists of personal letters from Tobey to Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst, and also to Bernard Leach (one copy letter). Included are postcards from Japan and seven photographs of Souchow, China. At least three of the letters have ink drawings of scenes in Japan. Another three letters are written from the United States in 1935. There are also telegrams and letters regarding Tobey's decision not to return to Dartington in 1938, following a second trip to the United States.
Postwar correspondence concerns the return of Tobey's art collection left at Dartington, and exhibitions of his work from 1955 to 1958. The letters reveal the extent of the Elmhirsts' patronage of Tobey through the years, and his affection for them both.
