ActivityAn artist, Hein studied art in Frankfurt and worked with Jooss as his stage designer. He left Germany with Ballets Jooss in 1933 and went with Jooss to Holland and America. Subsequently from Brussels went to Paris, 1934 to 1935. He came to Dartington Hall in 1934 and after being interned for a year in Australia at the beginning of the war he moved to London where he worked as a designer for films, including 'The Red Shoes'. Whilst the Ballets Jooss were living and working at Dartington Hall, Heckroth designed almost all the new productions. He became Head of the Design Department of Dartington Hall Ltd, 1938. He was Stage and Theatre Designer at Dartington Hall from 1934-1940. In 1956 he moved back to Germany and continued to design productions for opera, stage and films, for which he won three Oscars.

Daughter, Nandi, was a pupil at Dartington Hall School where she was a close friend of Ruth Elmhirst.
