Description | This series consists of legal and financial records of Dorothy Elmhirst which are indicative of the breadth of her investments in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The series includes legal and financial correspondence with legal counsellors and financial managers in New York and London, particularly Milton C Rose of Baldwin, Todd & Young (New York) and F A S Gwatkin of McKenna & Co (London). Other records include copies of wills, audit statements, and records of the incorporation, management, and liquidation of investment companies. An important subseries includes detailed reports to Dorothy Elmhirst on wide-ranging financial and legal matters pending between 1939 and 1949.
Tax records include court documents for tax appeals in the 1920s and 1930s. Other tax records include accounting information summaries by Price Waterhouse & Co in the 1940s and 1950s.
There are also records of the establishment of a number of trust funds. The series includes records of investment companies controlled by the Trustees of Dartington Hall, such as New Bascor Ltd, as well as records of holding companies for private trust funds, and correspondence about the management of trusts. Some New Bascor files were destroyed in the early 1980s. Extensive legal and financial records dating from 1925 were found in 2003 and have been added to the existing series. |
